A new study shows that heartburners use less of a form of acid-suppressing medication, including over-the-counter (OTC) Nexium, to treat the symptoms of GERD, including acid reflux, acid regurgitation, and GERD-related symptoms, as well as to help patients who need long-term treatment.
Researchers from the University of California, San Diego, examined data from a total of 1,843 patients diagnosed with GERD, who had either not undergone a previous heartburner or who had had a heartburn for some time prior.
“We found that those who used less OTC Nexium experienced more heartburn than those who used a similar OTC GERD-control medication,” said Dr. Michael M. Jackson, the lead investigator of the study.
Dr. Jackson said that the study was important because OTC Nexium and other NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal side effects, such as bleeding from the stomach, ulcers, and heartburn.
“The risk of heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux is highest in patients with a history of GERD or an ulcer,” he said. “In other words, NSAIDs can increase the risk of serious cardiovascular complications, such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and death, even when used for a long time.”
The risk of heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux is highest in patients with a history of GERD and a previous heartburn, or history of GERD or ulcers. GERD is a chronic digestive disease that affects the lining of the throat, the stomach, and the esophagus.
A study published in theArchives of Internal Medicinefound that people who used OTC Nexium had a 40% increased risk of developing heartburn and a 15% increased risk of developing other heartburn-related symptoms.
Jackson said that OTC Nexium was associated with a 42% increased risk of heartburn in the first year of use. Other OTC Nexium was associated with a 25% increased risk of heartburn in the second year of use. These risks were similar for patients who had been on a heartburner for a year and for patients who had been on a GERD-control medication for a year.
He added that the findings should be considered by patients and doctors who use OTC Nexium and other NSAIDs. “The risk of heartburn is greatest in patients with a history of heartburn and a previous heartburn,” he said.

The study, which was funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), provides a proof-of-concept study of the drug's ability to promote acid reflux.
Researchers analyzed data from 1,843 patients diagnosed with GERD, who had either not undergone a previous heartburner or had had a heartburn for some time prior.
Researchers found that the study’s findings “showed that patients taking OTC Nexium were more likely to have heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux compared to patients on a similar OTC GERD-control medication.”
A similar study, in which the study analyzed data from 1,843 patients diagnosed with chronic acid reflux, found that the risk of heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux was highest among those with a history of chronic acid reflux, and those who had a previous heartburn were at increased risk of developing heartburn. However, researchers were not able to use data from the study’s participants to understand whether they also had risk factors for heartburn.
Nexium Control Tablets 20mg is used in adults for the short-term treatment of reflux symptoms (for example, heartburn and acid regurgitation).
Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (“foodpipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause you symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest rising up to your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
